Join Cyril Ramaphosa on air to raise funds for the JPO

Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra patron Cyril Ramaphosa will host a live fundraising phone-in programme on Classic FM on Thursday, 22 October 2009 between 8pm and 9pm.

People may not be aware that Ramaphosa, a prominent businessman and political luminary, is also a supporter of the arts – particularly the JPO. On the evening of the 22nd, he will be lending his personal charm and professional clout to help the orchestra secure funding through 2010.

“I am thrilled to be able to host a phone-in radio programme in support of this wonderful, highly skilled and dedicated orchestra of top-notch musicians,” says Ramaphosa.

“In addition to their soul-elevating performances, the JPO does fantastic work in developing promising young musicians and holding outreach programmes in the townships. I would like to encourage – no, challenge – businessmen to put their money where their mouth is during the live phone-in, and do their bit to ensure that arts and culture continues to flourish in South Africa.”

Being entirely self-sustaining, the JPO’s continued existence is reliant on donations from members of the public, proceeds from ticket sales and corporate sponsorship.

These various sources of funding enable the orchestra to invite international artists to perform in South Africa, in addition to offering varied and high-calibre programmes during its four six-week symphony seasons every year. The JPO also regularly lends its players’ musical mastery to operatic, ballet and Education and Development productions.

Established in 2000 following the demise of the National Symphony Orchestra, the JPO has made great strides in its quest to be nationally and internationally recognised as South Africa’s leading philharmonic orchestra. A significant number of the 48 symphony concerts it presents annually are broadcast on Classic FM.

The live phone-in fundraiser on Classic FM 102.7 on the evening of 22 October is aimed at helping it carry on its good work, providing employment for classical musicians, developing and educating up-and-coming talent – and, of course, delighting lovers of fine music.

Should you wish to participate in the on-air fundraiser, the studio phone is 082 234 4000, or phone (011) 789-2733.

Media Verklaring: Gatskop Musiek in Afrikaans!

Media Verklaring: Gatskop Musiek in Afrikaans!

Goodbye Miriam Makeba, Mama Afrika

Miriam Makeba aka Mama AfrikaFolk singer, Miriam Makeba, died at age 76 early Monday in Southern Italy after a performing at a concert against organised crime and racism. Spokespeople from the Emergency Room at Pineta Grande Clinic, A private facility at Castel Volturno confirmed that she was brought there from the concert.

ANSA news reported that she succumbed to a heart attack 30 minutes after the show, in which she showed solidarity toward Italian journalist Roberto Saviano, who had received death threats following on his book, Camorra, which discusses the crime syndicate in the Naples area.

“It’s a monumental loss not only to South African society in general, but for humanity,” said Department of Arts and Culture spokesperson Sandile Memela.

Miriam Makeba or Mama Afrika, as she was affectionately known, was born in Johannesburg on 4 March 1932. The daughter of a Swazi mother (sangoma) and a Xhosa father. She shot to fame in the late 50′s and the 60′s with a documentary (Come Back, Africa) and winning a Grammy working with Harry Belafonte.

She left South Africa in 1959 and spent more than 30 years in exile, becoming known as an anti Apartheid activist in the process. In 1960 when her mother died she tried to return to South Africa for the funeral, but was denied access to the country as her passport had been revoked. Some of her marriages were to Stokely Carmichael (American Civil Rights Activists) as well as Jazz legend Hugh Masekela.

X-Factor Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love, a bad move

Leona Lewis Bleeding LoveA song that’s been mulling in my head since I first heard it is Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis. Maybe I’m late to the party but I don’t get very excited about new music these days…However this single and the singer is absolutely stunning. There’s something deeply provocative about it and that’s in fact the clincher. You can buy her album from Kalahari.net or Amazon.com

FJ Shark once wrote about why following the advice from love songs is a bad idea for men. And how the love songs that women sing usually describe a failed relationship (think sinking ship). He says the guys they want to keep around just doesn’t put enough into the relationship and now she’s “bleeding love” because she’s investing so much with little or no return. When you read the lyrics of Bleeding Love you become instantly aware of how she puts herself down and puts this dream guy on a pedestal. So the song in itself is a typical example of misguided belief on how someone else, outside of your control, is supposed to make your life better “in this world of loneliness.” STOP that!

On a side note Leona Lewis is multiracial. Her father is a Guyanese Afro-Caribbean youth worker, and her mother is a social worker of Anglo-Welsh descent. She is also of Italian and Irish descent on her mother’s side. What an interesting mix and this likens her to Mariah Carey, famously multiracial, in more ways than just their music. Now it could just be a coincidence but the video below starts out with a black guy being thrown out by his white/blond girlfriend. He moves onto another white/brunette women, who’s latino boyfriend eventually walks on them. Why the black guy with the two white women I wonder? Yep, it could just be a sign of the times or fabricated subliminal messages of what is acceptable sent to you by the Merchants of Cool.

Anyway enjoy the song for what it is here…

Westlife at The Dome in Johannesburg

Went to see the Westlife concert at The Dome in Northgate today. Wow! I never thought much of this boy band and considered them a fad for a while. But hey they’re really slick bunch and the music is very catchy. They put on a great show but sad to say it was a bit short for the money paid. Total show must have been less then 1.5 hours and lets just forget Heinz Winkler opened for them. Who is he again?

Sean Burke’s new video – The Last Dayz

I’ve had the privilege of viewing a new music video by South African musician, Sean Burke.

The video entitled Last Dayz, is Men in Black meets The Matrix. This is superb 3D animation with a big focus on the quality of small details. The video is due to be play listed on MTV and it will be the first time ever a South African music video will be featured on MTV. Sean is certainly breaking new ground with this video and release of his latest album, Eludaquit. On Monday, 27 October 2003, Sean Burke will be featured in the The Star Tonight, the daily entertainment supplement of The Star, Gauteng’s most popular daily newspaper.
