How to avoid loosers on online dating websites

Evan Katz, American online dating expertMany people tell me that their biggest complaint about online dating is the quality of the people who are contacting them. Requests routinely come in from potential clients and former clients - “Can you write me a profile that stops these losers from writing to me?” And we laugh about the lack of quality in the dating pool and I finally tell them my disappointing answer to their very serious question: Absolutely not.

Maybe if I were a twenty-seven-year-old woman with an in-box filled with lewd come-ons, I’d have a different point of view about receiving too much mail. But I’ve had a few admirers over the years, and it has not once occurred to me to get upset when a woman showed her interest - no matter how unattractive, inarticulate or far away she might be. There are far more important things to focus on - namely, trying to ensure that the right people contact you as well.

Online dating is part art and part science. You try things one way, they don’t work, you try things another way. For example, if your sexy photos are attracting the wrong men, I’d sooner take down the pictures than blame the men. Since you can’t police what anybody else does, it’s wasted energy, all this worrying about the emails you receive from ineligibles. So he ignored your age requirement. So she doesn’t pass your attraction test. So he’s in a neighboring state and spelled “a lot” as one word. Big deal! Delete! Move on!

The only thing you need to concern yourself with is putting out the best possible profile - the best username, the best headline, the best photos, the best essays. If you do that, you can rest easy. Not only are you more likely to attract the right person, you probably won’t be worrying so much about all of the wrong ones…
