Established in 1946, Volkswagen South Africa is located in Uitenhage, an industrial town some 35 km from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. Since the first Beetle rolled off the line on 31 August 1951, Volkswagen South Africa has become one of the major passenger car manufacturers in the country. Today, our market share has more than doubled since the mid-80’s – increasing to such an extent that now one in every five cars sold in South Africa is a Volkswagen.
In 2006, we celebrated Volkswagen’s 55th anniversary in South Africa and proudly watched our 800 000th Golf – a white GTI – roll off the production line. Since then, we’ve launched a number of new models and model derivatives, reaffirming that People’s Cars are amongst the biggest sellers on South African roads.
