Information Highway stay South: Mobile Society
There is no disagreement, the future will revolve around the conception of Convergence, portability, affordability, and mobile banking. The next three years are likely to be dominated by South Africans, the younger generation, going into mobile banking. The key thing is that, do we have a conducive environment that permits the information highway to benefit the ‘information poor’? Is our legislative framework such that it allows fair, equitable market shares, while on the other hand, evenly spreading the fruits of a wireless world to the grassroots? Do South African consumers have more choice or more diversity, not just plurality?
Mobility 2006 was a success overall; the need is for policymakers to incorporate this success into a more consultative and people-oriented policy and regulations regime. In order to keep this information highway, reforms are needed, transparency is required and affordability is a basic right.
