Farah Fortune: How Passion Empowers Women to Create Reality

Today is the 5th in my series of blogs to celebrate the TEDxPortElizabeth 10th Anniversary. Farah Fortune is one of the most interesting people I met while living and working in Johannesburg from 1997 to 2013. After we met, she invited me to her birthday party, and we’ve been friendly ever since. We also spoke together at the Nelson Mandela University Student Public Relations conference in 2016.

Life is not just about what you see on TV. It’s about creating a reality that entertains you personally and passionately. Many of us grow up with preconceived ideas of success and happiness, often shaped by media and social expectations. However, true entertainment in life comes from engaging with what ignites your passion, rather than merely consuming it passively.

Farah Fortune: How Passion Empowers Women to Create Reality & Find Success

Growing up in South Africa and moving overseas, Farah shares a journey of discovery about what entertainment truly means—realising it’s a part of everyday life. Passion, especially for her, has been the key to unlocking a fulfilling reality, one that is crafted intentionally and powered by purpose. This is how passion empowers women to create reality and find success.

The Power of Passion in Life and Work

It’s easy to say you like a hobby or an interest, but passion is deeper than that. Passion is about loving your activity enough that it energises you rather than tires you. It’s that fire inside that keeps you going long after others might give up.

Farah Fortune emphasises that passion is essential in every facet of life—work, relationships, and personal growth. This passion is often underestimated but plays a pivotal role in creating a satisfying reality.

Empowerment begins with finding what drives you. Farah’s commitment to employing and mentoring women is a testament to how passion can spark change and foster community. From lawyers to accountants and suppliers, every role in her business is held by women, showing a deliberate choice to build a supportive female-centric environment.

This approach not only ignites her own passion but also empowers others to embrace theirs, creating a wave of positive influence.

How Passion Creates Your Own Reality

Many people mistakenly believe that their lives should resemble the flashy realities portrayed on TV or social media. The speaker explains that real life looks very different. It’s more mundane but can be equally, if not more, entertaining when you create it around your passions.

Like many of us, she worked and disliked nine-to-five before realising she could turn her love for music and entertainment into a business. It’s a reminder that finding your unique path is more rewarding than following someone else’s version of success.

There’s no rewind button on life—every day counts. The speaker shares how even the most challenging times taught her something valuable, reinforcing that every moment, good or bad, contributes to the reality we live.

Learning to appreciate life’s moments, rather than regretting missed chances or wishing for a different reality, is crucial. It encourages us to find gratitude and purpose even when facing difficulties.

How to Find and Sustain Your Passion

What makes you excited to start the day? Passion often presents itself as a steady pull towards certain activities or interests that satisfy your soul. For Farah, this was hip-hop music introduced by her brother, which later became the foundation of her entrepreneurial dream.

Finding your passion may require experimentation and patience. The key is to stay curious and reflect on what genuinely gives you joy and meaning.

Sometimes, passion doesn’t manifest as obvious talent or perfection. Farah highlights that even if you don’t look or perform perfectly, your passion can still shine through in the impact you have on others. Like a hairdresser who makes clients feel fabulous or a mentor inspiring new entrepreneurs, passion is best measured by the energy and positivity you share.

Mentoring and empowering others play a vital role in sustaining passion. The speaker’s work mentoring women across the globe, including challenging environments, reinforces the message that our passion can extend beyond ourselves and create tangible change.

Surrounding yourself with supportive communities and giving back can fuel your passion and help you stay connected to your purpose.

Practical Tips to Bring Passion into Your Daily Life

Even on tough days, small actions can improve how you feel. The speaker shares a body-language tip: placing your finger in your mouth and smiling at someone else—this often triggers a natural smile and instantly uplifts your mood. It’s a playful reminder that sometimes, joy begins with small, deliberate gestures.

Your life can be entertaining if you allow it to be. This doesn’t mean flashy TV or grand events, but it can be the joy found in spending time with friends, mentoring others, or pursuing your hobbies. Make your reality something that excites you every day.

Conclusion: Live Your Passion Every Day

Your passion is a unique gift that can shape your reality and empower those around you. Whether you’re just discovering it or nurturing a long-held love, don’t let your passion fade. Use it to create a life full of purpose, joy, and entertainment that is meaningful to you.

Remember, it’s never too late to find your purpose or start a new journey. Celebrate your passion, spread it through mentorship and community, and watch how it transforms your life and the lives of others.
